Questions Every Restaurant Manager Should Ask

When it comes to hiring waiters, you need to be very careful not only in who you hire, but also be able to vet them well. As one of the highest areas where turnover is an issue, you can save yourself a lot of time and headaches by simply being more careful when selecting waiters, just as you did when hiring in the first place. One area where restaurant managers can fall short is the questions they ask during the all-important interview. Often, just happy to fill a space, they start a hiring cycle where they end up having to repeat the process many more times than they would if they were a little more selective in their hiring. Here are some important questions to ask a potential new hire when you’re selecting waiters yourself.

These first questions are related to overall reliability and are very important:

•Everyone sometimes misses work. For what reasons have you missed a day at work in the past?

• In your previous position, how many days did you miss and why?

•Are there situations that may affect your ability to get to work or be at work on time?

• If I contact your previous employer, how do you think they will describe your reliability?

• If you have a scheduled break but have a desk that needs your attention, how would you handle the situation?

The following five questions will help you see the applicant’s flexibility:

•If eight wait staff are waiting at a busy time, but only five do their shift, what would you do to make sure the shift goes smoothly?

• In what ways can you ensure that you meet, greet and serve every table in a timely manner throughout the entire shift?

•You are about to finish your shift and the restaurant is suddenly very busy and your replacement is running late. How would you handle this situation?

• In the past, when you were called on a day off to cover someone else’s shift, did your previous employer say you were reliable?

• The other server is really having a busy partition problem and several of your tables have just left, what should I do?

The last five will help you gauge how honest the applicant is:

•If you found out that another employee was stealing, how would you handle the situation?

•If the restaurant was empty and you were on a break, would you take a few more minutes?

•Have you ever had to cover for another co-worker because you were going to be late or miss your shift, but not for the reason you called?

•When it comes to your tips, do you usually report all the tips you earn or just the amount needed to make minimum wage?

• Would you say that everyone in the workplace lies from time to time, or do you think that most people are generally honest?
