Coping With Job Loss – How to Adjust Mentally to Your New Situation?

You just lost your job. Accept that you may feel disoriented for a while. This is completely expected. Don’t be too hard on yourself in the first few weeks after you’ve been laid off. If you take the emotional, even traumatic, side of a layoff and let it flow, chances are you’ll regain your ground much faster than letting go of your emotions.

How to better adapt to the new situation? Three things come to mind: Do nothing, mentally separate yourself from your former employer, and enjoy your free time as usual.

“do nothing”

You can enjoy your morning coffee at 10 am. You can go for a walk around the neighborhood at 11 in the morning before watching some pointless TV shows for a laugh at lunchtime. In the afternoon, you could catch up on reading the crime novel languishing on your porch. Then you could take the kids to soccer instead of your husband. Just be as lazy or as active as you want. There is no right or wrong. You relax and get used to your new status as a person “between jobs” or “beginner in a new direction”. In fact, relaxing for a while may be the best way to calm down. At this point, calm down and don’t stress about the future.

Mentally separate yourself from your former employer

A great way to get rid of a former employer and let them go is to avoid contact with former co-workers unless they are your close friends. You must understand that the old company is now history. Every contact you have, every moment of sympathy with those who have been fired or are still working there only increases your agony. Resist the urge to hold on to your frustration or anger about your former employer and prevent you from moving on quickly.

It’s best to “declare victory.” You achieve this by telling yourself that you had a good time at your former employer; you’ve met some great people, had a good run, made some good money, learned a few new tricks… and now you’re ready for the best.

Sit on the sofa, close your eyes and review the past months or years at your former employer. Think about the laughs you’ve had, the successes you’ve had at work. Then close this chapter forever. Be content that you had a good job and still have a roof and shelter…unlike many others in the world. Count your blessings. Your job is gone, but your life is not over. You will find another job because you had one before. No need to despair.

Enjoy your free time as usual

You have no reason to stop your regular vacation. Doing what you like in sports, culture or social activities is even more important now – to mix and mingle, to be active. Continuity in your life should help you regain emotional balance. Don’t sit in your house all day and hide. Go out and enjoy life as much as you can.

Following these three actions for one or even a few weeks should help you put the past behind you. Remember, however, that this adjustment period must eventually end. There are so many other important things to do after losing your job.
