Imagine a young person sitting in a high school Spanish class trying to learn to speak Spanish while the teacher writes Spanish phrases on the board. That young man was me, and it wasn’t the best way to force me to learn a new language, to say the least. I struggled through four years of this with average grades and little retention of material. Now, years wiser and with a renewed purpose to learn Spanish, I set out in search of a program that would take me much further in learning Spanish and do it faster than those old school days of my teenage years. Here’s what I found.

Let me share with you what I wanted in the program. If I was going to pursue learning Spanish, and I was going to, I wanted to do it on my terms. There were only a few things on my wish list that any training program I was about to start would have to give me. See if you don’t agree that what I came up with needs to be included in any Spanish curriculum.

1. Control

It was very important that I was in complete control of when I studied, how much I studied at a time and where I studied. If I decided to take a community college course, I would be giving up all three of those things, and I just couldn’t let that happen. It would certainly be nice to stay out of the house to learn Spanish in the evening after a long day at work.

2. Fascinating and fun

I didn’t want the learning process to feel like work or boring like it did in high school. Active participation in lessons, as it seemed to me, will make learning not only easier and faster, but also interesting. I wanted to smile while I was doing my Spanish lessons. The presentation style of the program had to be engaging with different learning methods that could capture my attention.

3. The results

The program I ended up choosing was supposed to deliver results. I wanted to see positive evidence that many people had success with the program. I figured that even my ability to learn Spanish might be enough to pass if I found a program that had many successful students.

4. Help when needed

I didn’t want to be completely alone on the island. While I wanted to learn at my own pace, I also wanted access to help if I just couldn’t find an answer any other way. My motto is to always have a lifeline.

So, you ask, have I been looking for a needle in a haystack trying to find a Spanish language learning program that meets my four criteria? Let me just say that when I was looking for a needle, I found it! I’m a bit of a computer nerd, so when I discovered that I could use my computer to learn Spanish in a fun and fast way, I was very happy. I figured it doesn’t get much better than sitting at a computer in a den learning things that seemed impossible 30 years ago in that outdated high school classroom.
