Domain Name Registration – Changing Your Website URL

Registering a domain name is the most important step to take when creating a website, although not really the first step. The first step is to choose a good domain name!

Your domain name is the name of your online presence. Care must be taken to choose a good domain name, as it will live with you forever (as long as you are online!). Remember that a domain name is inextricably linked to your website. You can’t have one without the other. I once had clients who registered a website with their company name and wanted me to change it to a shorter abbreviation of their company name after a couple of months. This cannot be done without compromising your online presence! If you put any effort into building your website and promoting it online to get exposure; and when you start to see these efforts pay off in the form of targeted visitors who come to your site looking for specific products and/or services that you offer, be prepared to lose some of that if you really want to take the radical step of changing your domain name after of how your site is already built.

Sure, techies will tell you about permanent redirects so that all the traffic that used to go to your old website goes to the new one, but there are other factors to keep in mind.

1. Your presence has been established through other websites linking to you and using your domain name in the link. Suddenly those links are now pointing to the old website instead of the new one. Yes, setting up a permanent redirect will prevent the problem of visitors clicking through and not being able to find your website, but all those wonderful links coming to your website and voting for you will be gone. The search engine gurus will tell you that Google knows about permanent redirects, and all the good karma you built by having links pointing to your old site will now carry over to your new site…but why take the risk?

2. One of the factors that Google also takes into account when deciding how to rank your site in the results is the age of your site. If you suddenly decide to change your domain name after a couple of months or years, you are effectively creating a new website from scratch.

3. Any brand awareness you may have built around your website name will take a hit.

4. Configuring redirect commands to work correctly is a tedious and time-consuming task, and errors can occur. The site will need to be migrated with all file and page names preserved. Changing file names and page names at this stage can be very detrimental to your search engine rankings.

5. Google leads the way in being able to understand redirect commands, but not all search engines do. Therefore, the traffic you may have received from other search engines may be adversely affected.

6. You will need to maintain two hosting accounts, one for the old one and one for the new one, to ensure that the traffic going to the old one continues to be redirected to the new one. Unless you have to contact webmasters (probably thousands) and ask them to change the URL on all your website links, you’ll probably have to keep running these two URLs side by side forever. You never know how many people have bookmarked your site (or saved your old email address in their contacts folder). You can force visitors to try to visit the old website or use the old email address for a long time after you have made the move.

The bottom line is that if you’re choosing a domain name – think about it, because changing your domain name after you’ve already established yourself online is honestly not worth the hassle.

If, however, you must do this for legal reasons, such as a company name change or takeover, for example, you should understand that keeping the old name and using permanent redirection with htaccess is the best way to maintain continuity and traffic to your site.
