Concrete Resurfacing With Self Leveling Concrete Over Cutback Adhesive Or Carpet Glue
Concrete floors have become the new flooring choice for designers and homeowners in the US and Canada due to their artistic design and durability. When remodeling and renovating existing buildings, it is often necessary to convert existing flooring, such as vinyl tile or carpeting, to a concrete floor. If the existing flooring is in poor condition, it must be removed before installing the new flooring. The asphalt-based adhesive that remains on a concrete floor after the removal of old vinyl tile and other floor coverings is one of the most difficult and risky floor coverings to install a new floor covering. Removal of residue by sanding, sandblasting or blasting may contain asbestos. This causes serious health problems.
The use of solvent-based adhesive removers is excluded due to the smell of solvents in occupied buildings. Quietly, they are often not VOC compliant and this has a big impact on LEED scores.
The following steps are recommended for resurfacing adhesives and carpet adhesives with Päram 5500 self-levelling concrete:
- Before installing self-leveling concrete, the contractor must ensure that the subfloor is properly prepared.
- Thick clumps, powdery, fragile or otherwise weak layers of glue must be removed. Use the wet scraping method to remove thick areas and clumps of glue, as well as any weak areas that do not adhere well to the substrate.
- Any hollow spots or non-structural cracks in the floor should be addressed before proceeding.
- The temperature of the substrate should be at least 450F during application and the air temperature is maintained in the range of 50-800F. Adequate ventilation must be provided to ensure even drying.
- The surface is primed with Param Süper Primer. It should be evenly distributed over the surface of the floor, and then rubbed into the substrate with a broom with soft bristles. Avoid primer pudding. When applying by spray, make sure to cover the substrate in an even layer to ensure proper penetration and work the surface with a broom immediately afterwards. The drying time is from 2 to 4 hours depending on the climatic conditions.
- After the primer has completely dried, the base is ready for self-leveling concrete. Please follow the link for instructions on placing self-leveling concrete. http://www.duraamen.com/products_sl_concrete.php
- The surface of the Param 5500 must always be protected against oil, salt, water and surface wear by applying an appropriate sealing system. A very popular system is to apply Perdure E32 Waterborne Epoxy Primer/Sealer followed by a coat of Perdure U46 (Glossy) or Perdure U45 (Matte) Waterborne Polyurethane.
