Replace Linoleum With Tile In 5 Steps

So you’re tired of the 1970s gold and green linoleum in your kitchen, huh? Do you want something nice, modern, but not too expensive? Look, on some level we all have champagne taste on a tight beer budget, but if you dig a little and don’t be afraid of the work, you can get new floors done on the cheap.

First step- remove all bases and sill bars. Don’t try to peel the linoleum off the backing, just try to slide the levers between the backing and the floor. Depending on how well it was stitched and glued or not, it would decide whether it was a 2 hour or 2 day job.

The second step isAfter all the underlayment and linoleum were removed, and all the nails and staples from the underlayment in the floor, it was time for the concrete underlayment. There are several products that basically do the same thing, but Hardy Backer is the leading product in the industry today. Nail the underlayment to the floor above the floor joists and 6 inches around the edges and 10 inches in the field with 1 1/2 inch roofing nails.

The third step isDetermine the desired tile size and layout. Chalk lines on the floor in the desired patterns. Start on the far side of the room and first adhere all full pieces with an approved tile adhesive, using rubber “X” marks to maintain proper spacing. Once the full pieces are dry in place, you can measure the markings and cut out the special and corner pieces. Once these have been installed, the baseboard pieces are ready to be cut and installed.

The fourth step isFind a grout color that matches the color of your tile and mix it with the manufacturer’s specifications. Using a combination of buckets, sponges and floats, follow the package directions to apply the grout to the tile joints (remember to remove the rubber spacer before installing the grout). spread the grout evenly and clean it regularly with a sponge with clean water until the grout size is right. allow to dry completely.

The fifth and last –Sealing the grout is a step that most people skip, but anyone who skips it will regret it. spend an extra 2 hours and make sure your hard work stays beautiful for years to come. Sealing grout is cheap and easy, so be sure to do it!

That’s all. It sounds simple, but you need to have certain skills. Remember to take your time, relax and be a bit of a perfectionist. When you start to get frustrated or feel overwhelmed, take a deep breath, reread these steps, and think about all the money you’re saving by doing the work yourself.
