Spring Cleaning Is a Metaphor for Life

Who can’t benefit from looking at the world through a different lens and getting a new lease on life?

Lately I’ve been focusing on finding metaphors in everything, and spring is full of them. Take the ubiquitous metaphor of gardening. The basics include choosing plants, clearing land and planting seeds. Fertilizer, water, and sun will nurture and sustain it, and predictably, weeds will need to be pulled. The success of your garden works in conjunction with you and the environment, bringing a sense of achievement, pride and beauty to all. Keeping the mind in good condition is like tending a garden. We clear the mind of old beliefs and attitudes, choose our ideas and focus on planting positive thinking. We use love, encouragement and gratitude to neutralize our negative, toxic thoughts. A healthy mental attitude depends on partnering with a power greater than ourselves, as disciplining the mind often requires support. With a positive outlook, we will feel happier, including those around us.

So, given that each new season is about change – and your home is a reflection of you – here are fourteen ideas and metaphors to help clear the way for this time of rebirth:

1. Open the windows to let in the fresh breath of spring. Feel the warmth of the sun. Metaphor: Clearing stale, negative air with others creates more space and energy in your life.

2. To brighten up the room, get rid of dark, heavy draperies and windows. Metaphor: By hiding behind your fears, you cannot let the light of who you are shine through.

3. Eliminate tolerances, ie. things you put up with that cause stress. Metaphor: Let go of people, places, and situations that drain your energy.

4. Go through your winter clothes and give away anything that doesn’t fit, makes you feel ugly, or that you’ve outgrown. Metaphor: Let go of anything that no longer serves your highest good.

5. Managing anything, including clutter, is best done by breaking it down into manageable tasks. The less busy a room looks, the more you see. Metaphor: Just for today, know that you can handle anything. Try to remember that less is more in almost all areas of your life.

6. Before handing out material possessions, thank and bless them for their service to you. Metaphor: Let toxic people out of your life with love and gratitude because they taught you something you needed to learn about yourself.

7. Organizing and cleaning each room is a free way to de-clutter your home. Metaphor: To invite more peace into your life, clear your mind/body/spirit by letting go of internal baggage such as unresolved grief, self-imposed commitments, and old beliefs.

8. The way we do things is the way we do things. Pay attention if you are having difficulty making changes at home that will make your life easier, calmer, and easier. Metaphor: Where, how, and why are you resisting in your life that might be holding you back from moving forward?

9. Change will keep your relationship fresh and exciting. Make your living space reflect the love you desire by adjusting your environment accordingly. Metaphor: Constancy in life is death to our spirit. To change what is around us, we must change.

10. Store fresh cut flowers. Appreciate their beauty, feel their soothing presence, and enjoy them while they last. Metaphor: allow yourself to feel the gift of life and fill your heart with kindness. Accept that everything changes and ends.

11. Be active by nourishing your body. Preparing your own food allows you to know exactly what goes into it. Metaphor: We are responsible for what we feed our mind and soul.

12. Paint the front door with a fresh coat. Liven up your rooms with a splash of new color. Switch out those sheets, throws and pillows for lighter, brighter colors. Move things around to make the room look different. Metaphor: Cheer up with a new hairstyle. Wear a color you’ve never worn before. Release your mood with laughter, quirky attitude and more fun. Changing your opinion also changes your perspective.

13. Take time out from the TV, phone and computer. The sheer volume of data input these days leaves us with little room to process anything. Metaphor: Expand by finding a way to focus each day.

14. Pay attention to how you feel when you walk into your home. What needs to be changed? Is it cluttered? Does it reflect your taste or someone else’s? Metaphor: Ask yourself, “How do I want to improve the relationship I have with myself? What inner baggage do I carry with me? Am I living an authentic life?
