How to Reduce the Size of Your iCloud Backup to Avoid Risking Your Data
Apple provides every iCloud user with 5GB of free storage space that can be used to back up your iPhone or iPad. As data accumulates on your device, the total size of your iCloud backup may exceed the 5GB memory limit. The chances of hitting the 5GB storage limit increase if you back up multiple iOS devices to iCloud.
When your storage limit is reached, you’ll get a notification on your device that iCloud storage is full. At this time, it is not possible to perform additional backups to iCloud. Without a recent backup, you risk losing some data if your device is lost or broken.
Once you’ve reached your iCloud storage limit, there are basically three options for backing up your device:

Delete some data from your device to reduce the amount of data backed up to iCloud.
Check if you are using iCloud backup
If you’re not sure if iCloud Backup is enabled on your device, open the Settings app, select iCloud, then Storage & Backup. If the iCloud Backup slider is set to the on position, your device will back up to iCloud. To stop backing up your device to iCloud, set the slider to the off position. Disabling iCloud backup will mean that data on your device is no longer backed up automatically. To back up your data, you’ll need to connect your device to your computer and back it up using iTunes.
Also, at the top of the window, you’ll see the total amount of iCloud storage and the amount of storage that remains available for use. At the bottom of the window, you’ll find the date of the last iCloud backup.
Optimize your iCloud backup by deleting unnecessary data
To see what information is backed up to iCloud, open the Settings app, choose iCloud, choose Storage & Backup, then click Manage Storage. At the top of the window is a list of all devices backed up to iCloud. If you see an old device in the list that you no longer use, you can save space by deleting that backup completely. To remove a backup from the list, click on the device name and select Remove Backup in the window that appears.
To modify the backup data for the device you are currently using, click the device name in the list of backups. A screen will appear displaying the size of the backup along with the date of the last backup. There is also a list of apps included in iCloud backup. Apps are ordered by the amount of iCloud storage they use. The apps that use the most iCloud storage space are listed at the top. However, film is usually shown first, regardless of its size. For most people, Camera Roll usually requires the most iCloud storage space because photos and videos have a large file size.
To stop an app from backing up to iCloud, simply set that app’s slider to the off position. After that, your device will ask you to confirm the action by asking if you really want to stop iCloud backup and delete all app data from iCloud.
Deleting data from iCloud doesn’t have to delete it from your device. Data associated with this app is deleted from iCloud, and if the slider is in the off position, app data will not be included in future iCloud backups.
Go through the list of apps and turn off the slider for the apps you don’t want to include in iCloud backup. Just remember, if the app isn’t backed up and something happens to your device, you won’t be able to recover that data. So make sure you really don’t need to back up the app before removing it from iCloud backup.
Save photos to your computer
Maybe you have a lot of storage used for your Camera Roll, but you don’t want to completely stop backing up your photos to iCloud. You can copy photos from your device to your computer and then delete some photos from your device. Deleting photos from your device will reduce the amount of space required for iCloud backups.
Additional storage options
If you just can’t part with any of those photos on your device and still want to use iCloud to back up all your data, there’s always the option of purchasing additional iCloud storage from Apple.
