Job Hunting After 50: Don’t Let Age-Bias Hold You Back!

Is there age discrimination in the labor market today? Ask any post-50 job seeker and they’ll probably say yes. The problem in most situations is that it is very difficult to prove.

With a high level of competition for most jobs; after 50 job seekers, it seems that there is a tough competition for the available positions.

Here are five ideas that job seekers after 50 can use to level the playing field:

1. Change your mindset. If you think old ways, act old ways, and constantly talk about the past: guess what? You will be considered old and probably out of place.

Change your mindset. You are not old, you are experienced. Be physically active. Learn new skills. Study and acquire new qualifications. Think and discuss the future. Stay positive and project the right attitude. Do these things and the age problem will disappear.

2. Be aggressive in selling the benefits you offer the prospective employer. Use your craft and experience to sell yourself against younger candidates. You have a list of accomplishments that match the employer’s needs well. Take advantage of this fact.

At the job interview, consider the question of age. Include answers in the interview that you are physically active, have learned many new skills in the past two years, and have worked effectively for many young managers. Don’t leave these unspoken questions unanswered as they can be used against you negatively when making a decision.

3. Focus on one job at a time. Although you are qualified and can apply for a number of different jobs, your job search should be focused on finding just one job at a time. That means focusing like a laser on the employer’s needs. Write your resume and cover letter to highlight accomplishments that match the employer’s template for the open position. Remove from your resume anything that might distract you from this one job.

Your goal as a mid-level job hunter is to meet and exceed job requirements. If in your experience you’ve only performed a function about 5% of the time and that’s the number one need for an employer, increase your skills in this key area.

For your next job, this feature may not even be listed, so your resume writing plan should always be tailored to the employer’s needs. It’s a little more work, but it’s worth it.

4. Clean up your resume. Take experience of more than 15 years. Remove college graduation dates. Strongly emphasize your strengths and achievements. Make sure your skills and achievements match the employer’s requirements as closely as possible.

When you’re done, ask yourself, “Would I hire this person for this position?” If your answer is a resounding yes, you have a powerful resume. If the answer is No, you still have a lot of work to do.

5. Selling product benefits is a successful marketing approach. So, in “You” marketing, the benefits and value you bring to the job will be your biggest selling point.

No employer is looking for twenty-five years of experience, but they are much more interested in what results you will achieve when offered the job. Your accomplishments demonstrate a history of providing financial benefits to your previous employers, and it’s up to you how you can be just as productive in your new role.

As a job seeker after 50, you should emphasize your strengths and the age issue will take a back seat.
