Most Ideal Ways to Repair a Cracked Screen on Your Mobile Device
The screen of your mobile phone may be the most delicate segment. “More than 90% of the cracked screen repairs we do are screen replacements,” says Jack Murphy, vice president of communications at cell phone repair company iCracked.
So, how would you rate your phone? You can bring in an expert, usually the phone manufacturer or a third-party repairer. Or again, you can buy the necessary parts and tools, take a full breath and do it without anyone’s help.
The simplest arrangement is to return it to the manufacturer. For example, Apple charges about $130 for the iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 Plus models, and $110 for the iPhone 6. Start by taking the phone to an Apple Store or authorized repairer to see how quickly it charges. Otherwise, you have to mail it in, which means you’ll be isolated from your phone for three to five business days. Can’t live that long without your phone? With Apple’s express replacement service ($29 extra), the organization will mail you a loaner.
Third-party repairers. On the other hand, you can give your phone to a stranger. RadioShack repair company Werx guarantees 72-hour turnaround and offers a limited lifetime warranty. He charges $120 to $130 for a demo iPhone 5 repair, $50 to $250 for an HTC phone, and a staggering $300 to $350 for a Samsung Galaxy S4 or S5. If you’re working with a third-party, make sure they deliver on their work, says Ed Kuner, vice president of customer service for HTC Americas.
HTC, which makes Android cell phones, offers one free cracked screen repair within the first six months of purchase. Samsung Advantage mail-in screen replacement takes seven business days and costs $150 for a Galaxy S4 or S5. However, Samsung is unveiling a chain of walk-ins where you can replace the screen in an hour or less for a similar price. Two stores are open in the Dallas/Fort Worth region and a third is in Los Angeles, with more expected in other areas soon. (For other approved repair shops, call Samsung Customer Service at 800-726-7864.)
ICracked has hands-on experience repairing Apple and Samsung Galaxy mobile phones on site. Its 800 or more “iTechs” scattered across the US will also come to you. For the most part, they can replace a screen in less than 60 minutes, Murphy says. Most iCracked repairs cost between $100 and $110, and the parts come with a lifetime warranty.
Be wary of anyone offering a screen trade-in for $50 or less. Chances are you’ll end up with substandard parts, Kuhner says. “It might be another piece of glass, but you wouldn’t know what kind of glass it is.”
The DIY approach. You could save a couple of dollars by doing the repair yourself. IFixit, maker of do-it-yourself repair kits and assistants, offers a $90 iPhone 5S screen repair kit, which is $20 to $40 less than Apple’s repair costs. However, a medical screen replacement procedure is not for everyone; it’s a sensible strategy involving various small screws and details.
Moreover, if your phone is quite old, forgoing the cracked screen repair and buying another phone can be very beneficial. “Perhaps, it’s not just the screen that’s damaged. There could be all kinds of issues that you didn’t know about,” says Laura Estepan, general manager of the Best Buy Mobile specialty store in Manhattan’s Union Square.
