A System To Stimulate Short Term Memory

As we grow older, we find that our short-term memory is not as sharp as it used to be. We will have to make notes or lists to remember things in our daily life. Forty-plus years ago I learned a system whereby I can memorize fifteen to twenty elements and rhyme them in the order in which they are given to me. I can go to the supermarket without a shopping list and remember every single thing. Not only does this system stimulate your mind, but you can have fun with it. So here’s how it works.

First we need to create a series of what I call anchors. These anchors are pictures in our minds that are ridiculous and absurd. To give you an idea, my first five anchors are:

#1 A racehorse runs alone on a racetrack in the rain.

#2 A canoe about to swim over a huge waterfall.

#3 A parachute that caught on some power lines and just caught fire.

#4 The package falls off the back of the truck and bounces on the hood of my car.

#5 I’m riding a bullet train in Japan with Santa Claus.

Now let’s create a list of five items that we want to remember to buy at the supermarket. I’m going to list things you wouldn’t buy every day.

#1 Jar of dill pickles.

# 2 Bag of whole grain flour.

#3 Block of cheddar cheese.

#4 two cans of chicken noodle soup.

#5 Big bag of frozen corn.

We now associate our shopping list with our anchors, and this is what we now picture in our minds.

#1 racehorse runs alone down a track in the rain with a jar of dill pickles on his back.

#2 Canoe, about to cross the falls, discards a bag of whole wheat flour.

No. 3 chute snagged an electrical wire and just caught fire, with a chunk of cheddar cheese dangling at the bottom.

#4 The package that falls out of the truck and bounces on the hood of your car contains two cans of chicken noodle soup.

#5 is on a bullet train in Japan with Santa Claus, and he pulls out of his sack… a big bag of frozen corn.

You can expand to twenty or twenty-five elements by creating more anchors. You can also use this system to remember ingredients for a recipe or place items or events in a specific order. Record the anchors you create and number them without changing the numbering sequence. The funnier and more obscure the picture, the easier it will be to remember.
