How to Write and Design a Slide Presentation With OpenOffice Or NeoOffice Presentation Wizard

If you think you need to have MS PowerPoint to make a great presentation, I have to respectfully disagree. There is actually a free alternative that works just as well, if not better.

OpenOffice (OO) and its Mac version NeoOffice (NO) are two extremely powerful and complete office suites with a built-in presentation program called Impress, which in my opinion is as good as MS PowerPoint. And…it’s also FREE. Google “OpenOffice” and “NeoOffice” to download them from their respective sites.

Here’s how to design and prepare a great presentation with the OO or NO Presentation Wizard.

To display the word processor, select the Text Document option from the YOU/NO menu.

Choose File > Masters > Presentation from the menu to display the Fax Wizard. (Look out for the email, fax, agenda, and web page wizards!)

Or you can also choose directly File > Presentation from the OO/NO menu. It also displays the same presentation wizard.

SCREEN 1:

On the first screen (number 1) of the presentation wizard, you can choose one of the following three types of presentation: a) Blank presentation, b) From a template, or c) Open an existing presentation.

a) If you select Empty presentation option on SCREEN 1, you click Next and proceed to the other screens of the wizard. (See SCREEN 2)

b) If you select From the template option on SCREEN 1, the wizard allows you to choose from two modest built-in business templates available: New Product Introduction and Strategy Recommendation.

On this same screen, you can also choose the background of the presentation: dark blue with orange or subtle accents (my personal favorite).

You then click Next and proceed to the other wizard screens. (See SCREEN 2)

c) If you open an existing presentation, the wizard will let you view it on your hard drive. After selecting and opening a presentation, the wizard will take you to a full-fledged editing window of the Impress program.

There, as in MS PowerPoint, you can choose from many master pages, make any text edits on any slide, include a dizzying array of graphics, callouts, images, and even manipulate images (eg rotate, etc.) A number of things , which you can do with both the presentation template and the individual slides themselves, is too great and needs to be experienced in person to appreciate. (All this from a completely FREE app!)

NOTE: Both OO and NO open any MS PowerPoint presentation just fine, no problem! And when you’re done, you can save them back to MS PowerPoint and no one will ever know the difference.

Click Next to go to the next screen.

SCREEN 2:

On the second screen (number 2) of the presentation wizard, you are allowed to choose a slide design.

There is an apparent repeat here that may confuse some users, as the wizard again asks you to select a presentation style and presentation background, the same options as in SCREEN 1. However, this is not a repeat of the fact that you selected the Blank Presentation option in the previous screen.

SCREEN 2 also allows you to choose from the following output media options: Original, Top Sheet, Paper, Screen, Slide (my personal favorite).

Click Next to go to the next screen.

SCREEN 3:

This is where the fun begins, because you can choose from a stunning variety of transition effects, yes!

The Effect drop-down list has more than two dozen transition options, such as Wipe Down, Open Left, Clockwise Wheel, 3 Spokes, etc. You can actually see each of these effects in real time as you select them!

The Speed ​​drop-down list allows you to choose from three available transition speeds: slow, medium, fast.

After that, you can also decide if you want to move from one slide to another by default (manually) or automatically.

If you select Automatic, the wizard also allows you to select Page Length and Slide Pause Length.

Click Next to go to the next screen.

SCREEN 4:

On the fourth screen (number 4) of the presentation wizard, you are allowed to enter the following general information about the template:

What is your name and what is the name of your company? What is the topic of your presentation? Any further ideas to be submitted?

Click Next to go to the next screen.

SCREEN 5:

On the fifth screen (number 5) of the presentation wizard, you will be able to select the pages you want to display as part of your presentation.

Depending on the combination of selections you’ve made on the previous screens, you’ll be presented with a dynamic list of page options.

For example, if you choose Introducing a new product template. on SCREEN 1, on SCREEN 5 you will have the following page parameters:

Title, Long Term Goal, Customer Desires, Fulfilling Customer Needs, Cost Analysis, Strengths and Benefits, Next Action Steps.

If, on the other hand, you select Strategy Recommendation template. on SCREEN 1, on SCREEN 5 you will have the following page parameters:

Title, overview, long-term goal, current situation, development to date, potential alternatives and recommendations.

NOTE: Regardless of which list of pages you’re presented with, you can always select and deselect each individual page to further customize your slideshow.

After making all these selections, you click Create button. go directly to full Impress editing window.

And once there, you can more or less do all the editing actions available in MS PowerPoint, including choosing from a variety of master pages, editing text on any slide, including a dizzying array of graphics, callouts, images, and you can even manipulate images (eg rotate, etc.) according to your taste and needs.

This editing window offers you an alternative to work in the following editing modes:

Normal, outline, notes, handout and slide sorter.

You have no idea how powerful and complete this free presentation software is until you use it.

When you’re done, you can choose File > Save As and save your presentation in over a dozen presentation formats, including (but of course!) MS PowerPoint.
