Your Key Planet and What It Reveals About You
Once upon a time, the attributes of the planets were so well known and accepted that they crept into our language. Webster’s New World Dictionary of the American Language describes a saturnine as someone who is sluggish, gloomy, gloomy, serious, and taciturn – “born under the supposed influence of the planet Saturn.” A Mercurial person is described as possessing qualities attributed to the god Mercury or believed to be under the influence of the planet Mercury – eloquent, intelligent, perceptive, or possessing qualities reminiscent of the metal mercury: quick, quick-witted, fickle, changeable, fickle. The dictionary also defines the jovial type (ruled by Jupiter), the light or venereal sin (linked to Venus), and the mad (influenced by the Moon). Let’s take a look at the brief characteristics of the planetary types. Entire books have been written about each of these, so refer to them if you feel the need to clarify your understanding.
Solar Type: (Ruled by the Sun or the sign of Leo) This somewhat regal person has a strong need to shine, to stand out, and often does just that. All the words “I” are emphasized: self-expression, self-confidence or self-awareness, self-development, self-obsession, and even selfishness. At worst, a person can have a big ego and an insatiable need to be noticed, even to be the center of attention.
Lunar Type: (ruled by the Moon or the sign of Cancer) This is someone who spends a lot of energy worrying about the Moon. These include care, food, home, safety, women and women’s needs, family and emotions. A person’s past and birth family strongly influence a person’s behavior, habits, and emotional problems and often carry over into adulthood.
Mercury Type: (ruled by Mercury or Gemini or Virgo) This is a natural communicator who would do well to make a living using these skills. Otherwise, energy is wasted on the phone, the Internet, or incessant chatter. These individuals are restless, changeable and incurably curious. They don’t tolerate boredom well. They are intelligent and even intellectual, and often have a keen sense of humor.
Venusian Type: (Ruled by Venus or the signs of Libra or Taurus) For them, relationships are paramount and they feel unfulfilled without a partner. Romantic, charming, often attractive, if overly concerned with appearance, they crave a constant dose of affection and warmth from those around them. Attentive, caring people, they often hesitate in decisions because they want to please everyone and keep the peace. They can be too self-directed and therefore lack the desire to achieve something for its own sake.
Combative Type: (Ruled by Mars or Aries sign) These people are action-oriented, often recklessly rushing into action before carefully considering or planning. They are often seen as leaders because they have abundant energy, drive, diligence and confidence in their goals. They can be aggressive, short-tempered, or competitive, and they lack patience with slow, less certain people. Easily angered, but the sign and aspects of Mars determine how readily they express anger and how it is expressed.
Cheerful Type: (ruled by Jupiter or Sagittarius sign) This type seeks answers to life’s important questions. In this pursuit, they tend to remain perpetual scholars, whether they are formally schooled or self-taught. Once they find an answer they like, they don’t hesitate to enthusiastically spread the word to others. As such, they are often formal or informal teachers, preachers or publicists. They can be conventional, moralistic and preachy, but generous, with a good, if twisted, sense of humor. Optimistic by nature, they seek to encourage and encourage others and find lessons in every trial.
Saturn Type: (ruled by Saturn or Capricorn sign). These people form firm goals at an early age and devote a large part of their free time to their achievement. Serious, focused, reliable, obedient, responsible, and capable beyond their years, they can also be brooding perfectionists or depressed, brooding workaholics, especially when they fail to achieve their lofty goals. The older they get and the more they achieve their goals, the more they soften and weaken themselves. They can become tribal elders with valuable practical experience to pass on.
Uranian type: (ruled by Uranus or Aquarius). These individualists – one might even say personalities – are full of eccentricities that can either endear or turn others off. They can arise when society exerts too much pressure to obey rules that conflict with their opinions. Often forward-thinking, supportive of social causes, or brilliantly inventive, these people will often be avant-garde, rarely mainstream, although they may start a fashion. Their tormented parents somehow survive a tumultuous adolescence where authority is constantly questioned. They can be adversarial and often reject a workable system simply because it is outdated.
Neptunian Type: (Ruled by Neptune or the sign of Pisces). These beings, like the smoke that surrounds their iconic planet, can be confusing and confusing. Their perception is less focused on the material world than on the realms beyond it – the spiritual, astral, creative and imaginal dimensions. Hard to define, they can switch between savior and saved, nurse or patient, saint or sinner, spiritual seeker or lost soul, inspiration or delusion. Some are prone to addiction or fantasy to escape a reality that doesn’t match their dreams. However, they can break this pattern, and if they do, they have a lot to teach us all in this age of addiction.
Plutonian type: (ruled by Pluto or the sign of Scorpio). Often suffering painful betrayals, losses and abuses of power in their early years, these hawk-eyed observers of humanity and life itself can be wary and distrustful. Their perceptions are sharp, deep, and accurate, but the conclusions they draw can be distorted by old traumas. When shown the path to healing, they will obsessively work to overcome their own illnesses, or those of others, or society at large. Many become therapists, doctors or social reformers. (I dedicated an entire book, Healing Pluto Problems, to these brave souls.)
Outer Planet People: I refer to Outer Planet People, or OPPs, who are common in astrology and New Age circles, but rarely in the bank teller cage. In their charts, two or more outer planets – Uranus, Neptune and Pluto – are strongly emphasized. There are subraces of OPPS – Uranus-Neptune type vs. Pluto-Uranus type vs. Pluto-Neptune type, as detailed in the Outer Planets and Inner Life volume. However, they all share that they are not of this world and feel separate and alienated from Earthlings. Many would describe themselves as Starseed. (If you don’t know what a Starseed is, there’s a good chance you’re either not OPP or in denial.)
OPPs generally don’t come into their own until the mid-life cycle, when they gain strength from double doses of the energy of the outer planets. (In the late thirties to mid-forties, transiting Neptune squares natal Neptune, Uranus opposes natal Uranus, and Pluto squares natal Pluto.) At that time, they and others of their generation muster the courage to fully express the outer planets and remember their personifying purposes. Since all the outer planets will be in universal signs for the next few decades, we desperately need their help for Earth to survive and for us all to transition to a global/galactic culture.
