LED Christmas Lights – Are They Really the Only Choice for Saving Energy? Think Before You Shop
Did you notice last year? LED Christmas Tree Lights, Literally the Newest Entry into Eco-Friendly Christmas Decorations flew away from the shelves. Total LED Sales Reportedly Reached – Are You Sitting? — stupefying 7.4 billion dollars in 2009. This includes LED lights, LED Christmas tree lights, and other types of household LED lighting.
But are LED Christmas lights really the eco-winners they claim to be? Like “organic” and “100% natural,”green” is an elastic concept. And there is definitely a greener alternative to LED Christmas lights, but more on that in a bit.
One thing is certain: LED Christmas lights use less energy than conventional Christmas lights. So compared to the big Christmas lights and even the miniature Christmas lights you may have grown up with, LEDs are a better choice from an energy standpoint. They also make sense for outdoor Christmas lighting because they are maintenance-free and have a long lifespan.
Undoubtedly another: LED lighting is here to stay. It has market traction and the industry is enthusiastically promoting it. For example, one major construction supply chain has just launched a campaign to recycle old Christmas lights, offering a discount on LED Christmas tree lights for every batch of incandescent bulbs that customers turn in. at the start of the season, sales will skyrocket this year.
The best thing since granola?
Do LED Christmas lights fit into the granola lifestyle? Although they use less energy, it would be a big stretch to call LED Christmas trees and LED tree lights natural product.
The LED light cord is made of oil-based plastic (like all light cords these days). And the LED lamp itself is covered with epoxy resin, an ultra-hard chemical polymer. Although epoxy resin is widely used in some products, epoxy resin contains Bisphenol A, a harmful substance that has been banned in some consumer products. Some buyers are trying to rid their living space of chemical-based products, including building materials, wood finishes, home textiles, carpets, work surfaces, etc. Others simply want to reduce the amount of plastic in their lives. These consumers may want to consider LED Christmas lighting.
Fire safety and prevention are top concerns every Christmas season – rightly so. No Christmas lights can be 100% safe. But LED lighting is promoted as particularly safe. Even so, problems can arise. Just a couple of days after Halloween, major marketer Costco announced that it is recalling a line of Christmas figurines lit up with LED lights that could cause a fire, most likely due to some kind of electrical problem. Such a problem at the start of the shopping season highlights the fact that even LED Christmas lights are not necessarily risk-free.
As the LED balloon…
LED Christmas lights are pretty cool. But this is exactly the problem in the eyes of some buyers. They are too cool.
LED lighting differs in spectral quality. Some people feel it’s heavy on blues and light on yellows, reds, golds and tans – all colors on the toasty end of the spectrum. Of course, this is subjective. But if you’re sensitive to light quality, LEDs may not be your choice, especially if you’re looking for a warm and cozy feel. The new lights have received mixed reviews and look like an LED balloon among some traditionalists and aesthetes.
Logging out of the network
Christmas should not be a burden on the environment. Let’s say you’re serious about ditching your old incandescent bulbs and going green, but you can’t quite get your head around LED Christmas tree lights.
Luckily, there’s a low-tech alternative that uses even less electricity than LED holiday lights: Candlepower. in fact, New Year’s candles will take you completely off the grid. They do not use electricity to produce light – only air. This makes them the greenest alternative to incandescent and LED Christmas lights. And from an aesthetic point of view, they can’t be beat. The sight of the Christmas tree bathed in the warm light of natural candles will stop you in your tracks. It’s mesmerizing. The wonderful, warm feeling it evokes is hard to describe – it’s something you have to experience.
You can light the tree with candles because of their beauty or because they are 100% green. But safety should be your top priority. Use candles carelessly and you could start a fire. But if you take your time, place your candles correctly, and use common sense, you can enjoy them in peace during the holiday season.
For our grandparents who celebrated Christmas in the pre-electric era, Christmas candles were only option when it came to trimming the tree. But they didn’t just melt the end of the candle and bang it on a branch. They used simple, whimsical candlesticks made especially for Christmas trees. Unfortunately, Christmas candles and candlesticks for the Christmas tree fell out of favor when electric Christmas decorations hit the market during the First World War.
Finding a source for your Christmas candles and candlesticks
In the 19th century, two types of Christmas candlesticks were used. One of them is a candle holder for a Christmas tree, or a clip for a Christmas candle. Another is a pendulum Christmas tree candle holder that has a stem that swings over the branch and a weight that holds the candle upright. But before you rush to the store to buy them, you should understand that we are talking about a product that was forced to become obsolete and was actually absent from the market for ninety years. It can be difficult to find.
You won’t find German Christmas candles and candle clips in malls, and it’s doubtful you’ll even find them in specialty stores. They are still made in Germany, but ordering them retail from a store in Germany can be difficult. A better solution? Find a reliable USA based online dealer that imports Christmas tree candles and authentic German made candlesticks. If you live in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand or anywhere else, choose a US webshop with experience selling in your country.
What will it be for you this year? LED Christmas lights or Christmas candles? LED holiday lighting will undoubtedly continue to capture market share. But the power of candles is a noticeable game changer at Christmas. It’s not for everyone. But for those who like the idea of a “slow Christmas,” this might be an option worth trying. It’s as eco-friendly as possible, and it’s a way to send a message to your family, friends and neighbors to slow down, tidy up and simplify.
