Have Hollywood Horror Movies Gone Too Far
Hollywood horror movies haven’t come far in recent years. To think about it in terms of the distant sunset is ridiculous and idiotic, to say the least. Most of the horror releases of the last ten years have been neither sad nor relevant in the way of arguments. Anyway, the horror genre has been saturated with lackluster pg-13 movies and unrated horror releases on DVD. Hollywood as a whole hasn’t released a hard-R rated horror movie in a long time, and it didn’t go too far. Yes, some of them were violent, but none of them reached the blood level of the 1980s. In fact, the goriest horror films ever made on American soil aren’t even top contenders for any awards, and they haven’t had official or extended releases outside of the DVD market. With Japanese horror films, remakes, and political thrillers, Hollywood is absent from the horror arena when it comes to gore. To say they’ve gone too far is just plain silly.
The Japanese, if anyone, should be blamed for going beyond horror cinema. They are constantly pushing the realms of the unreal, and the films are toned down considerably in American releases. American versions of Japanese movies are usually scary unless loud noises scare you. There is little to no blood in these films. If you compare The Ring, Malice, or Dark Waters to their Japanese counterparts, you will see two very different films. The US releases have even been rated Pg-13, and teenagers flock to them in droves. These movies aren’t scary, don’t focus on bloodshed, and deal more with ghosts than anything truly terrifying.
Remakes of horror movies can be seen as updates to the original stories. Still, these films are just as gruesome and gruesome as they were when they were made. In any case, the new updates of these films use modern techniques, computer compositing, make-up and more advanced direction than their older counterparts. This is especially evident in Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake. It was certainly gruesome and gory, and while the original Halloween movie didn’t need gore, this movie just pushed the envelope to differentiate itself from the original. If you rewind time a little and compare the remake of Gus Van Sant’s Psycho with the original Hitchcock masterpiece, you will see that the frame-by-frame remake does not bring much benefit to the audience and fans of the original film. Van Sant’s version, though done frame by frame and in color, is a sad trot through what you’ve already seen. Hollywood can only push the envelope in hopes of attracting audiences, and the generational gap between horror fans only proves that Hollywood hasn’t gone too far.
Political thrillers are never criticized for going too far. With strong criticism of the government, the Middle East and terrorism, the political thriller has never enjoyed the same scrutiny as horror films. People need to look more closely at things like political thrillers and their content before saying that Hollywood horror movies have gone too far. Most horror movies are related to fiction, and even those based on real events are fictional to the point of being fiction compared to movies that deal with the current state of war, the oil crisis, or movies that try to show death. the president.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to say that Hollywood should stop making politically oriented movies. What I’m saying is that when comparing Hollywood movies, you have to consider that horror is first and foremost fiction. For those who believe that horror films have gone too far in recent years, perhaps they should watch non-horror films such as Mysterious Skin or Wicked Creek, both of which depict the death of innocence among children, before pointing fingers at the films horror as a genre.
