Garnet Chronicle (Japanese Version) – PSP Review
Today I had a chance to spend some time with Garnet Chronicle, an anime RPG, but unfortunately it’s the Japanese version and as far as I know there’s no release date for the English version.
History and controls
Since it’s in Japanese, I’m still vaguely aware of what’s going on! Your hero is a student of the Knight Academy. Your first quest is to bring a letter of recommendation from the head of the academy to a commander somewhere near the village. Suddenly, the entire battalion is attacked by an evil character and his werewolf-like companion, unsurprisingly, the entire battalion is wiped out, and of course our main character survives, but only barely, and is saved by a sexy elf villain/treasure hunter. From now on, she joins you in your quest for the Evil Mind Stone (sorry, this is a direct translation from Japanese to English). Then, once you’re in the Tower of the Lost, you meet another character, this time he’s a mage class, and he joins you afterwards. This is how far I am in the game.
Controls are normal walking with the analog stick, R will call up the map, but there is no map yet when you enter a dungeon, circle is confirmation and cross is cancel, typical Japanese style, in the US version these two buttons can be reversed. Unfortunately, there is no start button, so walking can feel slow at times. You can also save the game at any time, and thankfully the menu is in English, as well as the explanations in Japanese, but only the menu.
Game and graphics
The game is pretty much the same old Final Fantasy-like turn-based RPG (before Final Fantasy X-2, as the battle system changed starting with FF11). You and your enemies will take turns attacking/defending/casting magic on each other. It’s good, except it feels very slow and quite boring, it would be great if the attack was more fluid and fast, so that the attacks are executed as soon as the previous one has finished its turn. But as you get more people on your team, the fight gets more interesting and faster, so it’s not that bad. Level grinding is also part of the game, but not required. However, leveling up is surprisingly fast, at least for the first 20 levels, which can really speed up the grinding process. As you complete each battle, you’ll be rewarded with money, experience, random items, and skill points. Skill points can be spent on each character’s skill tree to unlock more powerful attack and support skills. Unfortunately, skill points are split between all your characters! Last but not least, the money you earn in each battle will obviously go towards buying weapons, armor and support items. There are also cards and stones that can enhance your weapons, such as turning your sword to gain an ice element and enhance your special abilities. Treasure chests are scattered all over the map, in buildings, in the forest or anywhere in the villages. Some of them are less obvious, as I found one hidden so far.
One cool feature that I’ve never seen before, at least in RPGs, is the sneak feature. If you approach enemies from behind without being seen, you can deal damage to them before the battle begins. The same applies to enemies, if they spot you they will run towards you and if you turn your back to them they will attack you first. You’ll know when your enemies have spotted you when an exclamation mark appears over their heads. This feature doesn’t depend on who attacks first when the battle starts, so there’s a chance you can attack twice before enemies can attack you, same goes for enemies. If you can use this feature, you can really gain an edge in battles and make battles a lot easier.
The graphics are not fancy but well drawn anime style. Everything is 2D based, but don’t let that put you off because even though the characters are simple 2D sprites, their facial expressions and body gestures can be seen depending on the situation. There are also some nice flashy special effects when your characters use their special abilities.
One thing I don’t like is the fact that all the enemies look the same on the map, so you don’t know what enemies you’re going to face until the battle screen comes up. I don’t understand why the developers can’t make the enemies show up on the map as well. But then again, what if there is more than one type of enemy, which one will they show? Maybe that’s why.
Your usual anime music, your characters and enemies will say something before attacking which makes the battle less boring. Sometimes your characters will even be voiced during conversations. I can imagine that the English translation would be bad and take away the Japanese “atmosphere” just like any other games that went through Jape to English. Overall, the music is great for the most part, but sometimes it can be too repetitive and annoying afterwords.
The final verdict
Overall I think this game is worth a try, there is nothing new about this type of game, but still enjoy the game. I had problems with the PSP shutting down while playing the game until it ran out of batteries. This should give you an idea of how addictive and enjoyable this game is, especially for level lovers like myself. Hopefully an American version will be released soon so that you English speakers can enjoy this game as much as I did. And for those who can read Chinese, Japanese, or have no interest in history, you should be able to get a copy from eBay or YESASIA.
