A Wise Old Man Made Up a New Word – His New Word Was "Prepentance"
It’s a brand new year. 2009. If you haven’t made any big decisions about how to spend this New Year, maybe you’ll consider some of these thoughts.
A wise old man who used to help the Tabernacle Choir do the weekly radio and television broadcasts, Richard L. Evans, has coined a new word. He took the word “repentance” and added only one letter “r”. His new word was “presentation”. Since no one had ever used the word before he used one of his shows to explain it to anyone listening.
He said that everyone has to make certain decisions about how they will live their lives. Then he said that some solutions are better than others. For example, quick decisions are generally not as good as well-thought-out decisions. A snap decision made under pressure is usually even worse. He said it’s much easier to make a decision beforehand than to wait for someone to suggest you drink alcohol, smoke a cigarette or take some illegal drug.
Punishment can also be useful for many other resolutions, he said, including how you’ll use your new time in the New Year. Although everyone has time, because that’s what life is made of. Few people understand time. Why is this? This is because time is only a thought, an idea, a concept. Time exists only in the human mind.
It is convenient to think about time divided into three parts – past, present and future. Just a few days ago, 2009 was in the future. What do we know about our individual futures? We know almost nothing! It exists primarily in our imagination. In our visions of things to come, some of us have hopes of what we would like them to be, but that’s not repentance, is it? Those who are stronger have desires, but this is not repentance either. Those who are stronger have intentions, and this is not pretension. Those who are stronger have goals and plans. Because goals and plans stem from decisions, they are a form of repentance.
Goals and plans for this year 2009 may be based on our knowledge of past events (ours or others). As humans, we feel that we can shape our future by what we think and do in every moment of the present. “Now” is the totality, the ever-flowing stream of thoughts and feelings in the head. The “past” is just a set of thoughts and pictures stored, usually in disorder, in the mind and especially in the memory of what happened to oneself and other people, things, places and events. Your past is different from my past, and our past is different from the past of every other being who has ever lived or will ever live.
“For all sad words with tongue or pen
The saddest: it could have been.”
Conservation is a preliminary remedy. You will never have to feel as sad as Alexander Pope’s words describe if you choose to use repentance as the way you think and do now or how you choose to use your time. We can manage ourselves this way and not worry about how we spend our time. Where is time taking us? Through preparation, choosing what we think and do, it can gradually and confidently lead us to the goals we have chosen for ourselves. Preparation can bring us the most lasting personal satisfaction and prevent the pain of unnecessary loss.
You are above the average person. You think and act constantly in a special way. You have certain good habits (those that lead you to your goals) that have become second nature. You completely give up some bad habits (those that would lead you away from your goals). Yes, you qualify! Time is a series of opportunities to do what you want to move you toward what you want.
If you’re not going anywhere and you don’t want anything, it doesn’t really matter what you do with your time. Therefore, as much time as possible during waking hours should be devoted to thinking about your goals and moving towards them. Only if this is your way of working will the future be filled with pleasure and not regret. Use this basic thought as motivation to find and read lots of good books and surround yourself with people who can support your best goals and plans for the New Year.
Remember that the precious gift of time can only be improved according to the results we want to get from it. We can decide how we will spend (or, if we are wise, invest) each minute and hour as they come – while they come (we never know when they will end). Time wasted cannot be recovered. Adopt (if you haven’t already) an attitude of humility, or at least choose to find pleasure in bringing goals and plans to the use of time.
