Everyone likes t-shirts. New or old, plain shirts or heavy designs, t-shirts are always there to wear when we want to feel comfortable. It’s an easy gift that’s a constant presence at tourist traps, concerts, sporting events, political campaigns, family gatherings… you name it, there’s a t-shirt for it.
Unfortunately, the constant purchase of t-shirts often leads to an overflowing closet. But don’t throw those t-shirts in the trash just yet. Here’s a list of things you can do with your old t-shirts instead of dumping them in the city dump. After all, they are your shirts! They deserve better!
Turn the garment blanks inside out and sew the arms and bottom together (minus the small opening at one end). Pull the shirt right side out, fill it with feathers, stuffing or foam, sew up the opening and you have a pillow.
Or go green by cutting off the sleeves and neck, then turn inside out and sew on the bottom. Turn it right side out and you’ve got a reusable shopping bag that’s easy to carry around. Sleeves are now handles!
You can add even more to your wardrobe by turning an old t-shirt into a cozy nightgown. Just cut off the bottom of the t-shirt, right under the armpit, and then sew it on top of the other.
Or, if you have a whole pack of t-shirts you want to reuse, design and create your own quilt. The first step is to design your layout by planning ahead to decide what shirt you want where and what size. Remember, measure ten times, cut once!
After washing and drying the materials, cut the sides of the shirts, discarding the sleeves, giving yourself a piece of fabric.
Then cut out your blank clothing blocks. The template used for cutting is a useful tool for this step as all your blocks will be the same size.
After cutting, lay out the final composition as planned in your original design and then start stitching them together. To make your job (and life) easier, sew the blocks in separate rows rather than focusing on row stitching.
Don’t really have any old t-shirts? No problem. There are tons of resources to purchase a large number of t-shirts. Order blank t-shirts in bulk online, allowing you to choose the sizes, colors and patterns you want to use. While it may not give the same unique individuality to your finished product that you can achieve using your old, used t-shirts, using blank shirts will give you more options to make your project exactly how you like it. .
