New Kitchen Cabinets in Just Three Days – Our Story (With a Very Happy Ending)

I’ve been learning a lot about kitchen cabinets lately.

My wife and I have a house that was built about 50 years ago. At some point in the first 40 years, the kitchen was remodeled. The cabinets, doorknobs and accessories have been updated, and the worktop has been replaced with a long white bench that has two round brass sinks built into it. Once very cool. But last year we decided we were going to put the house on the market and the kitchen definitely needed a more modern design and look.

So we called a builder friend and he helped us think through the situation. DIY kitchen cabinet installation was an option, but we realized that if we got some kitchen cabinet designs from the cabinet makers and I then helped our builder friend install them, it would take much less time than it would take me to do it myself. And it doesn’t cost too much extra.

So our next step was to consider wood or metal construction. There are many very beautiful metal kitchen cabinets on the market today and in new homes. But since our house is old, we chose used wood. A quick trip to a few home stores gave us a number of painted kitchen cabinets, and over the course of a few weeks we slowly formed an idea for our new kitchen layout and color scheme.

Finally we are ready. After checking the sizes and colors with our friend, I ordered ready-made kitchen cabinets from a kitchenware retailer, and they were waiting in our garage a day or two later.

The rest was easy and quick. Together with a friend, we tore out the old cabinets and put firewood and old doors into firewood for the next winter. It took a day. Assembling the flatpack cabinets and installing them and the countertops took another day. It was then that I saw the value of our friend’s help: he knew how to quickly put cabinets and a bench on the upper level and plumb with a slightly deformed wall.

Our last day was spent cleaning up, watching the plumber work on the sinks for an hour, and that night my wife and I cooked in our brand new kitchen.
