A New Breed of Camcorders Hits the Market
Cameras that can record have been around for a while. They started with a Super-8 camera, which could produce grainy, choppy, silent film. This progressed in the 80s with the creation of VHS and 8mm camcorders. While these types of cameras were cutting edge in the 80s, they are now a relic of the past. The new age of video cameras is dominated by digital video cameras. These next-gen cameras now record crisp, sharp digital images, and the high-definition models are even better. These digital video cameras range in price from $700 to $1,500.
They shoot footage in much the same way, except it’s recorded digitally instead of VHS or BETA tapes. The ease of editing these videos is impressive as they can be downloaded onto a personal computer. Now you can add titles, transitions and soundtracks. They can then be sent over the Internet, saved to a hard drive, or burned to DVD. It’s much more enjoyable to watch the results.
There are many choices of digital video camera formats: DV (digital video), Digital8 and DVD. DV camcorders use Mini-DV type media for recording. It is essentially a DVD quality video (720 by 480 pixels resolution). DV camcorders are the most common type of digital camcorder. The only problem is that each tape can only handle one hour of video.
Digital8 is a throwback to Hi8 camcorders. These types of recorders can read older 8mm and Hi8 tapes as well as newer Digital8 tapes. They are harder to find, but are capable of recording longer videos. Newer DVD camcorders allow you to edit on the machine instead of downloading the footage to a PC. Video quality is not as good as DV or Digital8.
DV and Digital8 recorders use FireWire or IEEE-1394 to connect to a PC for download. You can download videos directly from your device to your PC. Once there, you can do whatever editing you want, but be aware that storing videos takes up a lot of memory. Editing material is easy. If you know how to cut and paste in a word processor, you can edit videos on your computer. When you’re done editing your material, you can send it back to the recorder or burn it to DVD. Make sure your drive has DVD burning capabilities.
