HP Pavilion Desktops (a6540in) – A Reliable Choice
I bought my new PC last month after much research and thinking about brand, price, configuration and looks! So, I’ll share my experience with my new HP a6540in PC now that I’ve been using it for a month.
Basic configuration: Processor Core 2 Duo E4700 (C) DC 2.6 GHz (65 W), 250 GB hard disk, 2 GB RAM (expandable up to 4 GB)
The HP brand has long been known for its printers, all-in-one devices and other peripherals. I’ve been using the same thing for as long as I can remember. So, when it came to choosing a branded PC, HP beats the rest with its reputation and sense of reliability.
The desktop reviewed here is one of their latest models released in July, the a6540in. The computer has a sleek design and a very useful chassis that provides two USB ports, headphone and microphone slots on the front panel. A cover is provided that can be closed when not in use to protect it from dust and make it unsightly.
The monitor I bought was a w1707 which is a 17 inch TFT screen. You can choose according to your requirements – do you need a bigger screen or a small one. From my usage, I find a 17″ monitor to be fine for most purposes, although sometimes you see 1/4 of the screen wasted as most websites are designed for standard 14″ monitors. But it is very convenient when working in MS Word or Excel, as you can view most of the documents without having to scroll through them. The monitor has built-in speakers.
The keyboard that comes with this model is very comfortable to use with its design and keys. It also provides keyboard shortcuts for some standard functions, such as launching a browser, email client, search or help, etc. You can also control the speaker volume using the keyboard.
One of the biggest benefits of choosing HP products is service. The company has its service centers in all major cities, and you can call them on a toll-free number. to get help or use their online support online. They offer warranties with different periods for different models from 1 to 3 years. One of the reasons I chose this particular model (over the relatively more expensive cost) was the 3 year warranty that comes with it. Be sure to register your product on their site and save your receipt – as the warranty can only be used on production of the purchase invoice – there is no separate warranty card/statement.
The computer comes with an original licensed version of Windows Home Basic. You are also provided with a trial version of Norton Internet Security, which you can purchase online from Symantec. Instead I purchased Norton Antivirus 2008 as it was sufficient for my requirements. Using the licensed version entitles you to regular updates and security alerts – I strongly recommend that you purchase a system with the original software preloaded. There are other models available that cost much less, but only come with DOS, and then you’ll need to load Windows separately.
The only one lack which I definitely feel – they only give a 30 day trial of MS Office!! Although it’s not exclusive to HP, none of the other brands offer it either, but as a customer I feel that Office is the easiest software that everyone uses and it should have come pre-installed with full functionality. Now you are forced to either spend a good amount to buy it, or choose a pirated version.
Overall rating: HP gives you a whole new experience with your computer. Whether it’s sleek design, bundled software or after sales service, HP is the way to go.
In particular, the a6540in is a powerful machine with a Core 2 Duo processor, and you’re definitely getting a reliable, durable and long-lasting system with this purchase. The only thing worth noting is its price – a complete system (including the Microtek UPS) costs around INR 38,000. That’s acceptable considering the original Windows Vista you get with it, but it could still cost a little less.
