Buying Your First Guitar – How to Choose the Right Guitar to Give You the Best Value For Money

INTRODUCTION

Buying the right guitar to start learning is an important step that shouldn’t be rushed. You need to consider a number of factors. I will go into detail about each factor that I believe should be considered when buying your first guitar.

For many people, taking up a new hobby is like test driving a new car before buying it. They’re not sure if they’ll like it in two, three, ten years, and it’s hard to predict if you’ll like it. Many people who start learning the guitar give it up after a while for various reasons. For this reason, many people do not want to spend too much money that they are not sure will be good for them. One option you can take is if one of your friends or relatives owns a guitar. You can ask if you can borrow it for a short time to see if you like the idea of playing it or not. If after some time you feel that this is the right hobby for you, come back here and read this article to help you get the guitar you need.

BUDGET

For most people, this is the most important question. Guitars can range from cheap $20 acoustics found at garage sales to prestige guitars that cost thousands upon thousands. You should think about how much you want to spend and stick to it. Sellers will give you many reasons to pay more than you want, but understand that you can get a good guitar even at a low price. Consider the following points and how they will fit into your budget.

STYLE OF MUSIC

Once you’ve decided on the musical direction you want to take, it will affect the type of guitar you buy. If you really want to play heavy metal or similar styles, you won’t buy nylon strings because it won’t help you achieve that goal. Likewise, if you want to play soft ballad-type songs that you can sing along to while you play, an electric guitar might not be the right choice for you. If you have a particular style in mind, find out what guitars musicians of that style play. Look for your favorite artist’s gear to find out what kind of guitar they play, don’t look at the model or brand of guitar (because famous artists usually buy high-end products that are very expensive).

On the other hand, if you’re not sure what direction you’re going to play in, or want to play a variety of styles, the type of guitar you buy won’t be as important to your style decision. Instead, focus on the points below to find out which guitar is best for you.

Remember, you can always buy another guitar later, so don’t worry if you change direction after buying your first guitar.

PLAYFULNESS

ACOUSTICS OF STEEL STRINGS VERSUS NYLON

For a beginner, how easy it is to play the guitar will have a huge impact on how quickly you improve and develop your skills. If you start with a steel string, for example, you will quickly find that the strings are hard to press and you can hurt your fingers. Many women (and some men) will find it difficult to start playing a steel-string guitar because it requires a lot of finger strength to play. If you’re worried that this will be a problem for you, you might want to consider acoustic nylon string. Nylon string acoustics put much less stress on the fingers when pressing down on the strings. For this reason, most instructors recommend that students begin classes with nylon threads so that the first month or so is not too painful.

ACOUSTIC VERSUS ELECTRICAL

There is a big difference between how to start playing an acoustic guitar and an electric guitar. Many teachers do not recommend starting with the electric guitar for the following reasons. Electric guitars are easier to play than acoustic ones. For many people, this is fine. The problem with electric guitars being easy to play is that you’ll get so comfortable playing an electric guitar that if you pick up an acoustic and try to play the same music, it’s likely to strain a lot. Many guitarists who only play electric guitar find it difficult to play acoustic. It’s very difficult to go from playing electric to playing acoustic. Likewise, it’s very easy to switch from acoustic (especially steel string) to electric. That’s because acoustic guitars build strength in your fingers. Once you switch to electric guitar, you will find that your fingers can play with ease. So think about this problem and if you want to play both electric and acoustic, start with acoustic. If you want to play only electric guitar, then the choice is simple. Later on, if you decide you want to play acoustic as well, it may be difficult at first, but with practice, playing acoustic can improve your playing.

QUALITY

There is a wide range of guitar quality today. It’s like the car industry: you can buy a high-end Ferarri, you can buy a run-down used Toyota, and everything in between. You should aim to buy the best quality guitar within your budget. But don’t be fooled into thinking that only expensive guitars are quality. You will be amazed at the quality guitars available at low prices. Your best bet is to bring along a friend or relative (who is a competent player) to check out the guitar you’re considering. As I explain below, you should not rely solely on the advice of a music store salesperson. Remember to stick to your budget.

BRAND

Many guitarists suffer from “brand loyalty”. This is when they are so loyal to a particular brand that they never buy or play another brand of guitar. Don’t be one of those people. It’s perfectly fine to prefer a certain brand because you like the style of their guitars, but don’t fall for the idea that one brand is better than all the others. Each brand has its advantages and disadvantages.

Just like in a supermarket where you can choose between “name brand” products and “domestic brand products”, the guitars will have well-known “name brand” guitars and unknown brand name guitars. Sometimes the only difference between guitars is the name printed on the headstock. People pay big bucks for guitars that have Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, PRS, Martin printed on the headstock. Although buying a brand name guitar will most likely get you a very high quality guitar, it can be a very expensive choice. My suggestion is to find a guitar that you like, regardless of brand. If it’s good quality and within your budget: go for it. Don’t buy a guitar just because it says fender. On the other hand, if you prefer to buy a quality guitar from a reputable brand, buy it for that reason.

SELLERS’ TRICKS

This section is intended to warn you of potential problems when dealing with music store salespeople. This is not to scare you or insult the sellers, but to protect you from people who want a high commission instead of giving you what you want. Hopefully, you will be dealing with an honest seller who genuinely wants to help you. Just be aware that not all of them are honest.

My first thing you need to consider is that the people who work in the shop are usually great guitar players. So good that they can make every guitar sound good no matter how low it is. In the next lesson, I’ll explain how you can make any guitar sound great. Just be aware that a salesperson can make the trickiest guitar in the shop sound better than a $2,000 grand piano in a glass case. That’s why I recommend you play guitar if you can play at least something basic, or better yet bring a friend or relative who can play. If they know what they are doing, they should be able to tell you about the problems with the guitar.

Audio retailers are well known to use a trick to make stereo systems sound better by turning up the volume a little louder than the other. Sellers may use a similar technique when comparing two guitars. By plugging the guitar they want to sell you into a high quality amp and playing it loud, you can make it sound fantastic. Some people may try this to get you to spend a little more. Don’t assume that a great sounding guitar will automatically make you sound great. It takes a lot of work to be a competent player. Great players can make any guitar sound great, and bad players can make any guitar sound bad.

My first guitar buying experience:

I was unaware of many of these issues when I bought my first guitar. Fortunately, the seller we dealt with genuinely wanted to help us and made sure we got a great guitar at a good price. I played my dad’s old beat acoustic guitar for a couple of years and my parents bought me an electric guitar. It’s a quality guitar and I still use it for recording and performing. So, if you make the right decision, the first guitar you buy will last a lifetime.

Since I started with an acoustic guitar, the transition to an electric guitar was incredibly easy. Consider buying an acoustic even if you want to play an electric guitar.

SUMMARY

I’ve highlighted a few important points to consider when buying your first guitar. There are many more factors you should consider, but I believe these are the most important questions. If you take your time to figure out what’s best for you and then shop around for the best deal, you’ll save money and hopefully end up with a great tool that will last you a lifetime.
