Writing Tips – Learn From Great Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators

I love my work. I spend days in the children’s section of a bookstore and call it research. I also celebrate the birthdays of people I have never met. We recently celebrated Maurice Sendak’s 80th birthday and the 45th birthday of his most famous child, Max from Where the wild things are. So I took the opportunity to revisit some of Sendak’s impressive work and get to know Brundibarhis recent picture book, written by Tony Kushner and based on the Czech opera of the same name.

Whether illustrating someone else’s words or his own texts, Sendak can never be accused of taking the easy route to publication. His books are complex, deeply emotional stories with subtext that often illuminates the dark side of human nature. In an interview that appeared in the November/December 2003 issue of the magazine The Horn Book MagazineSendak says, “…in children’s books we can get away with things that no one in the adult world ever could because the audience is assumed to be too innocent to pick up on it. And that’s really the only audience that does take it away.”

It is comments like these that show Sendak’s deep respect for his audience, and for the picture book as an art form. In the same interview, Sendak talks about how he chooses subjects that fascinate him, or those that resonate with him on a basic emotional level. These are not cute bedtime stories, but books that reveal his soul. Some cut too close to the bone – when it worked It’s over there he had a breakdown and left the project for six months. And although he is respected as one of the most influential artists in the history of children’s picture books, Sendak does not consider himself a genius. “I have neither a brilliant conceptual gift for drawing, nor any truly exceptional gift for writing,” he said. Horn book. “My talent is knowing how to make a picture book. To know how to pace her, to know how to time it. Drawing and writing are good, but if my whole career depended on it, I wouldn’t get very far. “

It inspired me to round up some of my other favorite authors/illustrators. I’m not an artist, so I respond to picture books not technically, but intuitively. Here are three author/illustrators whose work, in my opinion, embodies the pure emotion and wide-eyed wonder of childhood.

* Peggy Rothman: Ratman’s illustrations always say more than her texts. Filled with tiny, delightful details and minor characters acting out their own stories, her books enchant even non-readers. Her latest picture book, The day the children crawled away, stunning. The story is told by a mother who remembers the day her young son saved all the babies when they crawled away during the town fair (the parents were busy having a pie-eating contest). The illustrations are black silhouettes against a colored sky. Although we don’t see the faces of the characters, we always know who is who: the boy hero wears a fireman’s helmet, the babies are distinguished by bows, bonnets and knots. The butterfly starts the parade of children from the fair, and soon a caterpillar, a frog, a bat and a bird join him. The same butterfly flies to mom’s hair at the end of the day, when the tired hero falls asleep in her arms. Ratman makes clever use of every page of the book, starting the story with! endpapers and building through title page and dedication. Take a close look at the last photo to see how one child goes about his adventures.

* Ezra Jack Keats: Keats’s classic, deceptively simple picture books echo the everyday experiences that define childhood. In the analysis A snowy day, my lack of artistic experience became apparent. At first glance, I thought the illustrations were bold figures cut out of different types of paper, pasted on top of each other. But a closer look reveals edges of colors that blend together and lines that aren’t quite filled in as if they were painted with watercolors and a large brush. Faces were drawn with pencil or charcoal; snowflakes appear on stencils on tissue paper. In any case, the effect is childish, wet and a bit dirty, like playing outside after a heavy blizzard. My son especially likes how Peter, in his red snowsuit, makes footprints in the unstained snow, first with his toes and then inside. After studying the book, Matthew said, “I can take pictures like this.” We bought different types of paper and Matthew started creating artwork based on Keats. In my opinion, any book that is accessible enough that a child can make it on their own is a winner.

* Chris Van Allsburg: There is a magical, otherworldly element to Van Allsburg’s books that is often breathtaking. He is an extremely skilled artist who combines design, balance, color and texture in a way that makes you feel like you are walking right into the painting. In one distribution from Polar Express, the reader is above Santa’s sleigh as it flies over thousands of elves gathered in the center of a city at the North Pole. I almost feel dizzy every time I see it. Polar Express is a very personal story about a boy who goes on a magical train ride that takes him and hundreds of other children to the North Pole to meet Santa. Van Allsburg’s dark palette, the straightforward nature of the text, the portrayal of the North Pole as a city with tall buildings past the icy desert, and the poignant first-person narrative all help the story feel true. Put away those cute Santa stories – here’s the real thing.

I encourage you to spend a day in a bookstore or library to find the books that make music for you. By learning their rhythms, you’ll learn how to make your own stories sing.
