What is Cloud Computing and What Are Its Pros and Cons?

The arguments for this approach are generally strong in terms of convenience. This kind of activity is already common – either in webmail (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo mail, etc.), Flickr (photos), Megaupload (file transfer), Delicious (bookmarks), etc. Plus, there’s the software security aspect of hosting everything, where regular backups and software updates keep all your information safe. This is something that doesn’t happen often on a PC, a lot of information gets left behind when updates happen. However, there is a relatively weak argument for the economics of the cloud computing approach. Many of these applications are currently free, so the prospect of moving all your information from your PC to some remote server doesn’t make long-term economic sense from a large organization’s perspective. How do they pay for all the computers in the cloud?

Speaking to the Guardian about cloud computing, Richard Stallman, founder of the GNU Open Source Software Foundation, said: “It’s a trap… It’s worse than stupid, it’s a marketing hype campaign.”

Get Off My Cloud

Returning to the question of how these services will be paid for. Stallman remains convinced that fees will start small and then go up. As corporations (Google and IBM are two of the most vociferous proponents), their financial returns will no doubt be long-term, with less focus on short-term profits and far more interest in global market share. Google’s unofficial motto “don’t be mean” is certainly tested when using this strategy. Maybe it’s time to put the phrase in the closet for storage. It’s reminiscent of the IBM of old, when the world only needed about a dozen computers (or clouds in this case) – all owned by Google (with help from IBM). Upset these proprietary gorillas and it could affect the future of your business. These “cloud hosts” may find themselves in the position of choosing between businesses that will do well and those that will fade into obscurity. Which sounds feudal and undemocratic to me. And perhaps evil.

Privacy

There are, of course, other concerns, especially those related to user privacy. I know who’s viewing my computer is who I give permission to, and even then it’s probably just a login. With your information in the cloud, who knows who might be digging into your personal information? Wouldn’t the physical location of the cloud determine the laws that determine who can access the information? You don’t know and probably won’t know where it is or who has access to it.

The pro argument is like gutting the house and keeping everything in a big airplane hangar outside. If you want something, they send a car and you can get what you want. The only problem is I’m sure someone is using my stuff when I’m not around and on my way home on my last visit I saw a message saying that due to the costs involved in maintaining this service there will be a small charge from the next of the week and the very fine print at the bottom – the charge is much higher during peak times (weekends – when everyone really wants to use the service). They will probably finance it that way.

Old Hat

It’s an old strategy – lightweight networking was a buzzword 15 years ago. It offered a cheap price with low functionality (just like the “dumb” IBM terminals of the 1970s). You have a very basic PC with nothing stored locally and you pay to use the software on a remote server when you use it. That way you could get a PC for $300. It faded away and died as a concept – despite the support of all the major players. It is interesting to note that the price of $300 is in any case consistent with fully functional PCs and laptops. It’s a cautionary tale from history that even if you ignore the advice of corporations, you can still get what they promise.

I will keep my laptop and programs locally and post information online when I want to. I understand the argument that in business you have to constantly expand or you risk being squeezed out, but corporations that adopt this “take over the world” philosophy always end up looking like bullied, Bond villains. Look at Google on the bright side – if cloud computing fails to generate long-term user interest. You can dust yourself off and start using that ‘don’t be mean’ slogan again unofficially.
